Both in her own writing and as founding editor of Ms. magazine, Letty Cottin Pogrebin gave voice to the driving concerns of women in the feminist movement. Pogrebin began working for Bernard Geis Associates publishing and quickly became vice president, using the experience to write How to Make It in a Man’s World, a book offering career advice for working women. As the women’s movement gained momentum, Pogrebin became an activist, cofounding Ms. magazine with Gloria Steinem in 1971. Both as an editor and as a writer, Pogrebin tackled a wide range of issues, from societal issues like work and politics to more intimate issues of feminist childrearing, intimacy, and aging. In Deborah, Golda, and Me, she explored the tensions Jewish women faced during second wave feminism as they were asked to choose between their Jewish and feminist identities. Pogrebin has also worked as an activist for organizations such as Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hunger, the Jewish Fund for Justice, the New Israel Fund, the American Jewish Congress Commission on Women’s Equality, and the civil rights movement of Israel. She continues to write and lecture on feminism and human rights.
