Jackie Tabick
Jackie Tabick helped pave the way for others as Great Britain’s first female rabbi. Tabick became involved in the Jewish community at an early age, singing in her synagogue’s choir and joining the World Union For Progressive Judaism Youth Section (WUPJYS). She was ordained in 1975 by Leo Baeck College, Great Britain’s Reform seminary, at a time when many British synagogues didn’t even have mixed seating. Tabick worked for more than twenty years as the assistant rabbi at the West London Synagogue, and after the head rabbi’s death in 1996, she led the congregation alone for two years. Despite her experience, however, she was turned down for the position of head rabbi. She left to become rabbi of the North West Surrey Synagogue in 1999, where she remained until her retirement in 2013. She served as vice president of Britain’s Reform movement, and in 2013 became Convenor of the movement’s Beit Din (religious court), a role she still maintains as of 2016. She also serves as both an executive of the Interfaith Network and co-president of the World Congress of Faiths.
