Jewish Choreographer Honored At A Night Of History And Live Dance

BROOKLINE, MA, Nov 11, 2002—An unusual collaboration between The Jewish Women's Archive (JWA) and The Boston Conservatory (TBC) will result in an evening honoring the life and work of innovative American Jewish choreographer Anna Sokolow (1910-2000). On November 14th, Jennifer Sartori of JWA will join the Director of the Conservatory's Dance Division, Yasuko Tokunaga, and Jim May, TBC alum and Co-Artistic Director of Anna Sokolow's Players' Project, to discuss Sokolow's artistic journey and life history. Following the pre-performance talk and a reception, The Boston Conservatory Dance Theater will perform Sokolow's groundbreaking work Magritte, Magritte, a 1970 lyric theater piece inspired by the surrealist images of artist Rene Magritte.

A key figure in the development of modern dance in Israel and Mexico, as well as an important artist in America, Sokolow frequently found inspiration in Jewish history and culture. Sokolow is one of fifteen women featured on the Jewish Women's Archive's website because of her enduring contributions to our world. An artist of uncompromising integrity, "Sokolow challenged people to think deeply about themselves and society through her innovative works," says Sartori.

The Boston Conservatory Dance Theater is one of the oldest conservatories in the United States-and one of a very few which combine offerings in dance, music, and theater. TBC annually presents over 200 public performances. The November 14th pre-performance talk and reception will begin at 6:00PM. The performance of Magritte, Magritte will begin at 8:00PM, preceded by premieres of Luis Fuente's La Verdad Nunca Muere (The Truth Never Dies), and Donald Byrd's The Trial.
