Ruth Markus

Ruth Markus, Ph.D., is a retired lecturer in the History of Art department at Tel Aviv University and the founder of the Association for Women's Art and Gender Research in Israel. During her forty years of teaching, she published many articles in English and Hebrew on modern art and gender, and she is the author of the books Sculpting with Line and Space (Hebrew); Women Artists in Israel, 1920–1970 (Hebrew); Sex and Gender in Giacometti’s Couples (Hebrew). She is currently working on the book Reflections on Art.

Sionah Tagger

Sionah Tagger was one of the earliest modern Israeli women artists to have been born in Erez Israel. She played an important part in the development of modern painting there in the 1920s and 1930s and was among the first members of Israel’s Association of Painters and Sculptors and a regular participant in its exhibitions.

Artists: Yishuv and Israel: 1920-1970

 While women are often excluded from the historical narrative of Israeli art-making, women artists made significant contributions to the canon of Israeli art throughout the twentieth century. Depicting landscapes, creating ceramics, and painting beautiful portraits, many female artists made significant contributions to the development of the Bezalel Art school and Israeli modern art. In 1952, the artistic Group of Ten was founded, to use a modern language in order to express the Israeli experience and landscape.
