I wanted to provide some feedback from my perspective on Glazer’s new special. For context, I am a 26 year old college educated progressive woman. I vote and I’m also volunteering with Vote Save America. I’m Caucasian - with Russian, Uzbek, Irish and Jewish heritage. I also absolutely loved Broad City, and I was very excited to see that Glazer had come out with a special. I’m not very well read on trans issues, but I’m part of the LGBTQ+ community because I’m bi. I also have someone in my family who’s trans as well.
I guess I’m mostly writing because I loved her set from start to finish, and when I saw that it only had two stars I assumed because she made fun of neo Nazis that they collectively tanked her reviews. Reading your review I was completely surprised by your take. I did not feel any sense of relief or lack of agency about the current rise of white supremacy in the United States. I keep up on the news in this topic, and it was one of the many reasons I had to become politically activated. I don’t speak to some of my family because of their attitude towards this trend. So what I’m saying is I don’t take this shit lightly.
Her whole thing about neo Nazis was a joke. I thought it was hilariously observant and on point. I think if she was minimizing them, it was at their expense and done to make them feel small. It didn’t make me think - oh thank god, they’re nothing to worry about - they’re not real Nazis. It’s truthful, it’s comedy and she did a great job. She’s simply high-lighting the differences between them. Personally I’d much rather fight a neo Nazi than one of Hitler’s soldiers, wouldn’t you? It just seems holier-than-thou and a bit dramatic at the expense of a young, talented, up-and-coming Jewish actress/comedian.
To my point: when I first saw the ratings (2 stars - oof) I almost didn’t watch it because that’s so, so bad. But then I did, and was pissed that most people had rated it so low. So conservatives hate it, liberals hate it too, what’s the deal? What’s happening? Are we -meaning liberals- being a little too sensitive?
Also I don’t get where you’re coming from when you said she was being transphobic. I thought because of her queerness she’d be the last person to come off as transphobic - if she did, she probably doesn’t realize it. Maybe could you quote some of these microaggressions, so that she can try and learn from her mistakes? Nobody’s perfect.
I’m a well educated and progressive individual and yet I still thoroughly enjoyed Ilana’s performance. 5 stars
