When I first converted I said that I was "Proud to be a Jewess." My Rabbi's wife said,Ì¢âÂÒhat is awful to say.Ì¢âÂå I asked her and other Jewish sources why. For them it is degrading. Her earliest memories of the use of the word were to diminish the humanity of the Jewish woman. It was a way to parallel her to an Animal. For example: Lion and Lioness.
Her argument was also that Xians donÌ¢âÂã¢t say Ì¢âÂÒXianessÌ¢âÂå for female Xians. They are all Xians. All Jews are Jews.
To be honest I personally have no problem with the word. I think word meanings can change over time...Look at the cigarette!
