I am the Marion referred to as one of ELeanor's best friends throughout our high school days. Sam spent many hours with me during the writing of his book bringing past memories of our girlhood to life. I loved her parents dearly, seeing in them a unity denied me since my own father had died when I was only five. As an academic star in Morris High School, she was awarded four medals at graduation which she promptly and carelessly instructed her mother to "take home."

I went to college full time and our social patterns altered somewhat so that we would see each other only occasionally but were always in touch. Her constant clashes with her mother regarding Charlie, the love of her life who was Catholic, embittered her and she never really resolved the negative feelings (even hatred) her mother engendered. For this I was truly sorry, for I could not understand her failure to appreciate the cultural and religious ties which bound her mother to a way of life more suited to her European background and values.
