The Jewish Women’s Archive (JWA) invites you to its first professional development workshop in the Bay Area, “The Power of Our Stories.” The two-day program will help you bring the rich legacy of Jewish social action to life for your students.

As one of 25 educators who teach in Jewish settings in the Bay Area, you will have the opportunity to work with historians and master teachers to:

• INVESTIGATE the relationship between Jewish identity, leadership, and the fight for social justice;
• EXAMINE real-life stories of Jewish activists through photographs, letters, newspaper articles, and other primary sources;
• EXPLORE the wealth of educational resources on jwa.org, with emphasis on JWA's social justice curriculum; and
• LEARN new strategies for encouraging students to develop their Jewish identities as a springboard for activism.

Program Highlights

• Observe an oral history interview with Karen Jo Koonan, a veteran of the Civil Rights Movement, conducted by Rosalind Hinton, Oral Historian.
• Hear about the history of the Labor Movement, with highlights from California's labor history, from Steve Leiken, a history professor from SFSU.
• Learn about using new technology to do oral history projects in a session with staff from the Contemporary Jewish Museum.
• Participate in model lessons from the Living the Legacy project.
• Use structured time for lesson planning and collaboration.
• Get a detailed introduction to JWA's curricular materials from education staff.

Eligibility and registration

The workshop is open to educators of any gender working in any formal or informal Jewish education setting. The content on our website is designed for use in grades eight and above, but we welcome educators who are interested in adapting the material for younger students. Please register as soon as possible. Space is limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Though the program is based in San Francisco, we welcome applications from educators up and down the West Coast, and some moderate travel/hotel stipends are available. Please contact us if you have further questions.

Kosher lunches and snacks will be provided. Free parking is available at the Jewish Community High School.

Stipends and Reimbursements

A limited number of stipends for travel and lodging are available for participants from other West Coast communities. To learn more, please email Etta King, Education Program Manager, or call 617-383-6763. Local participants will be reimbursed for travel expenses (train fare, mileage, tolls, parking) up to $50 per day. We will provide written confirmation on completion of the workshop for anyone who needs to meet continuing education or professional development requirements.

Living the Legacy: A Jewish Social Justice Education Project

Living the Legacy (LTL) uses primary sources to explore the roles of American Jews in the Civil Rights and Labor Movements. The 24 lessons that comprise LTL include art projects, text studies, role-playing opportunities, and more, providing new entry points to Jewish identification for young Jews interested in social justice. LTL is designed for use in both formal and informal settings with students in grades 8-12. The materials are flexible and easy to adapt, and all the resources in LTL are free and accessible online.
