What will happen to my story once it’s submitted?

Your recording will be safely stored, along with all accompanying materials and information, in JWA’s electronic archive. Depending on the restrictions you place on your submission, we may also use it, in part or in full, for articles, promotional materials, or online exhibits, and/or share it with researchers.

Who owns the rights to my story once it’s submitted?

We do not claim ownership of your submission; you retain all rights to the submission. However, subject to the opt-out options available at the time of your submission to JWA, you grant us license to use, distribute, adapt, and modify your submission, in whole or in part. Please see our Terms of Use for details.

Can I record a story and not submit it to JWA?

Yes. If you do not hit the “Upload Story to JWA” button, we will not receive a copy and it will not be stored in our archives. It will, however, be saved under “My Saved Stories” in the app.

Do I have to get permission from my “narrator” to share her story with JWA?

Yes. Make sure your narrator understands what Story Aperture is and gives you permission to share her story. If she does not want you to share it, you can save it under “My Saved Stories” and/or share it with her using the “Share Audio” feature.

Ideally, you should record the following at the beginning of your interview: “Today is (date). My name is (say your name) and I am interviewing (narrator’s name) who was born on (date of birth) in (place of birth). (Narrator’s name), do I have your permission to record this interview and submit it to the Jewish Women’s Archive?”

Can I submit more than one story to JWA?

We hope you will! You are welcome to interview as many people as you see fit.

Do I have to answer all of the questions in a given Question Set?

No; Question Sets offer suggested prompts - you can ask some, all, or none! We encourage you to ask your own questions when appropriate and follow your narrator’s lead during the interview.

I’m not sure which question set to use. What should I do?

If none of the topical question sets seems appropriate, use General Questions.

I’m afraid of losing my story through the app. What should I do?

It’s a good idea to save your audio recording in your own records as well. Under “My Saved Stories,” select “Share Audio” and choose your preferred method to save the recording.
