An actress who cared deeply about the world, Shelley Winters donated the Oscar she won for her role as Mrs. Van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank to Otto Frank. Winters broke into Hollywood in 1943 as a blonde bombshell, but transitioned to serious character roles and earned an Oscar nomination in 1951 for her role as Alice Tripp in A Place in the Sun. She also wrote a play and two autobiographies. She taught Method acting at the Actors Studio in New York for a number of years. An activist from a young age who organized a strike at Woolworth’s at age fourteen, Winters later took part in the civil rights movement and refused to travel to Germany to film scenes for the movie I Am a Camera because of her family’s experiences in the Holocaust. Over the course of her career, Winters performed in over a hundred movies and fifty plays, as well as a number of television shows, and won two Academy Awards and an Emmy.
