Vocabulary Term: Prophetic Tradition

A reading or understanding of Judaism that emphasizes the commitment to justice, as rooted in the biblical prophets who were known for condemning rote religious behavior and corruption and for challenging their communities to live justly. The prophetic tradition has been championed by the Reform Movement in America, as well as by social justice leaders such as Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.
