As you just heard, the Jewish Women's Archive has been recognized by Slingshot for our innovation and impact. Next week you'll have the chance to meet with JWA staff in person, when Emily Scheinberg, Assistant Director for Educational Outreach, leads two Bay Area workshops that use contemporary texts to explore history and Torah:


CONNECTING TO THE CONTEMPORARY: THE JEWISH WOMEN'S ARCHIVE'S TOOLBOX FOR NON-TRADITIONAL TEXT STUDY
Monday, Oct. 19; 12-2 PM
Bureau of Jewish Education, 639 14th Avenue, San Francisco

Why are contemporary stories central to Jewish education? How can teaching with texts from our recent history enrich our curricula? What alternatives to traditional chevruta are out there? JWA and the Bureau of Jewish Education are partnering to bring you an introduction to the Jewish Women's Archive's "toolbox," including new resources on social justice and on bat mitzvah. Together we will explore an expanded definition of what makes a Jewish text, and participate in "text" study using primary source documents such as newspaper articles, letters, photographs, and audio recordings. BRINGING THE TORAH TO LIFE: CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES
Thursday Oct. 22; 5-7:30 PM
Contemporary Jewish Museum, 736 Mission Street, San Francisco

JWA is collaborating with the Contemporary Jewish Museum and other local partners to bring you a multi-part workshop that uses the exhibition As it is Written: Project 304,805 as a springboard for conversation and learning. Tour the exhibition, share ideas with colleagues, and participate in mini workshops to examine three exhibition-inspired themes:
  • Judaism and Gender, presented by Emily Scheinberg of the Jewish Women's Archive;
  • Animating the Torah, presented by Sarah Lefton of G-dcast.com; and
  • Off the Bima B'nai Mitzvah: Revisiting Rituals, presented by Rachel Brodie of Jewish Milestones.
Curriculum resources will be provided, and a light dinner will be served. The evening will conclude with a public reading from and conversation with Dan Schifrin, Writer-in-Residence at the CJM. Dan will read excerpts from his novel-in-progress, Freed, which explores a number of Jewish coming-of-age stories, both traditional and unconventional.

This workshop is most appropriate for educators in Jewish settings who work with adolescents preparing to become B'nai Mitzvah, however, all educators are welcome.
