This article, accompanied by a sensationalized and highly inaccurate drawing of the Haymarket bombing, is characteristic of the hostility with which the American press covered anarchist events in the late nineteenth century. The author displays considerable prejudice against the anarchist community, whom the police and the press blamed for the bombing and the ensuing violence. Emphasizing the foreign roots of many anarchist activists, he characterizes their beliefs as seditious and exaggerates the violence of their rhetoric. In fact, the rally had been peaceful, and the crowd had already begun to disperse at the request of the police when the bomb exploded. Contrary to the claims in this article, the police opened fire first following the explosion, and police gunfire was responsible for most of the casualties.
