Raquel Torenberg

Raquel Torenberg was born and raised in Mexico City. A sociologist and an expert in education, she attended the University of Hartford and the Jerusalem Fellows program in leadership in Jewish education. From 2004-2011, she served as academic director at the Universidad Hebraica and from 2012-2018 she was principal of the Colegio Hebrew Sefaradi, both in Mexico City.

Jaya Torenberg

Jaya Torenberg (born Elena Rodov) was a pioneering Mexican Jewish educator. After working as a Yiddish teacher, in 1972 she became the first woman to become director of a Jewish school As an author and an educator in several prestigious institutions, she is a well-known figure in the Mexican Jewish community.

Mexico: Education

The first immigrants to arrive in Mexico during the early decades of the twentieth century from Eastern Europe, Syria, and the Balkan countries were profoundly concerned with the formal education of their children. At that time, part of the controversy in the community was whether Mexico should be an “in transit” country to the United States or a place in which to settle permanently, in which education would play an important role as part of the socializing process.
