Ruth P. Schoenberg

Ruth P. Schoenberg is a member of the faculty of Brooklyn College, C.U.N.Y., in the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science. Formerly an associate editor of the Israel Dance Institute publication Nirkoda, she currently has similar responsibilities with the English language portion of Rokdim/Nirkoda, a project of the Israel Dance Institute in New York City. She is also the co-editor of the Clearinghouse Calendar, Kesher Lemachol, a bi-monthly publication of the Israel Dance Institute. She has participated in various Israeli folk dance activities as a dancer, resource person, teacher, group leader, performer and choreographer. Since 1959 she has been involved with the annual Israeli Dance Festival in New York, serving as archivist for the Fiftieth Anniversary festival program, Horati, in 1998.

Israeli Folk Dance Pioneers in North America

An intense desire to share the joy of dance coupled with a strong identification with both Israel and their Jewish roots profoundly affected a diverse group of North American Jewish women. Each added a dimension to the flourishing of Israeli dance activities in communities, including regional festivals, workshops, performing groups and weekly folk dance sessions. All were also involved in enriching Jewish education by training teachers and developing dance resources or programs.
