Sara Kadosh

Sara Kadosh, director of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee Archives in Jerusalem, received her Ph.D. from Columbia University. She has been a Research Fellow at the International Institute for Holocaust Research at Yad Vashem and assistant professor of Holocaust studies at Touro College in Jerusalem. She has published articles in the fields of child rescue during the Holocaust, the postwar Berihah movement and Zionist history and is a contributor to The Holocaust Encyclopedia, ed. Walter Laqueur.

Rose Viteles

Rose Viteles was an American-born social worker and volunteer who, after moving to Palestine in 1925, became involved in the operations of several Zionist organizations including Hadassah and the Haganah. Her help was essential before and during Israel’s War of Independence.

Nettie Sutro-Katzenstein

Dr. Nettie Sutro-Katzenstein founded SHEK (Schweizer Hilfswerk fur Emigrantenkinder), a non-denominational Swiss women’s organization for helping refugee children, in 1933. An effective and dynamic leader, Sutro-Katzenstein directed SHEK headquarters and recruited volunteers, gaining the support of the Swiss public. Between 1933 and 1948, SHEK cared for over 10,000 refugee children, 90% of whom were Jewish.

Eva Michaelis Stern

Eva Michaelis Stern was co-founder and director of the fundraising arm of the Youth Aliyah in Germany, and later the director of the Youth Aliyah office in London. Over the course of WWII, she helped more than 1000 children from countries all over Europe immigrate to Palestine.

Laura Jarblum

Laura Margolis Jarblum

Laura Margolis Jarblum’s deft management of wartime social services on three continents for the Joint Distribution Committee saved the lives of thousands. After World War II, in 1946, she became the JDC’s first female country director in France.
