Ingerlene Voosen Embry

Ingerlene Voosen Frick holds a Master's Degree in American Studies from the University of Kansas and a B.A. from Bates College. Portions of interviews she conducted with female jazz vocalists can be found in the oral history collection at the Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University. Currently she is lending her skills to the real estate industry as she confidently shepherds clients through the maze of home purchasing and selling in Kansas City.

Sylvia Blagman Syms

Sylvia Blagman Syms was a gifted jazz singer who earned praise from Billie Holliday, Frank Sinatra, and Duke Ellington. In 1949, she was discovered by Mae West, who became a significant teacher and influence on Syms’s intimate storytelling performing style. Sym’s went on to record fifteen major albums and tour the United States and World before dying of a heart attack. 

Linda Lavin

A prolific performer on stage and small screen, actor-singer Linda Lavin has been a role model for many of America’s working women. While her Jewish heritage has not always been the focus of her career, she has powerfully portrayed Jewish women whenever the roles have come her way—which they increasingly do.
