Henriette Dahan-Kalev

Henriette Dahan-Kalev is the director of the gender studies program at Ben Gurion University in the Negev. She received her Ph.D. in political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has published a book and articles on Mizrahi (Arab-Jewish) feminism and on Mizrahi politics. Dahan-Kalev divides her time between academia and human rights activity.

Vicki Shiran

Vicki Shiran was an Egyptian-born Israeli social activist dedicated to feminism, anti-occupation activism, and fighting discrimination against Mizrahim in Israel, all of which she viewed as interconnected. In 1999 she helped found Ahoti, For Women in Israel, which promoted the labor rights of lower-class women in Israel, and in 1981 she led a fierce fight against the Israel Broadcasting Authority for its exclusion of Mizrahim in its telling of the history of the Israeli state.

Mizrahi Feminism in Israel

Mizrahi feminism goes beyond the typical western scope of feminism to include the history and issues that concern women in the Middle East in Israel and in Arab and Muslim countries. An intersectional feminism, it is particularly sensitive to issues of race, class division, immigration, and ethnic discrimination.
