Susan Chevlowe
Susan Chevlowe is an adjunct assistant professor in the Program in Jewish Art and Visual Culture at the Graduate School of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York. A former associate curator at The Jewish Museum, New York, she has organized numerous exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Her recent publications include The Jewish Identity Project: New American Photography (2005) and Common Man, Mythic Vision: The Paintings of Ben Shahn (1998), both of which accompanied exhibitions at the Museum. Chevlowe holds a Ph.D. in art history from the Graduate Center, City University of New York. In 1992 she won the National Jewish Book Award for Painting a Place in America: Jewish Artists in New York, 1900-1945 (1991), co-edited with Norman L. Kleeblatt. The catalogue, for an exhibition held in 1991 at the Jewish Museum, also won New York State’s Henry Allen Moe Prize.
