In 1998 Limor Mizrachi became the first Israeli, male or female, to play professional basketball for an American team when she joined the New England Blizzard. Mizrachi began playing guard for Israel’s national team at age fifteen, captaining the team in the 1990–1991 season. She then played college basketball for the University of Maryland Terrapins, starting in 31 games and setting a school record of 32 three-pointers in one season. She returned to Israel after one year due to her mother’s cancer diagnosis, captaining Israel’s national team again from 1992 to 1998 and earning MVP status three times. She then joined the Blizzard, part of the American Basketball League (an early rival to the WNBA), and played 13 games before the ABL declared bankruptcy. After playing briefly for Gospic in Croatia, she played for Maccabi Ramat Hen and then Ramat HaSharon as guard from 2006 to 2008. She retired to become assistant coach of the Netanya team in Israel’s Women’s Premier League and served as assistant coach for Israel’s basketball team in the Division B Women’s European Championship in 2012. From 2016-2017 she served as assistant coach of the Israel under-16 basketball team, which placed fourth overall in the European championship.
