Tamara Cohen
Rabbi Tamara Cohen’s work with the Jewish Women’s Archive and Ma’yan: The Jewish Women’s Project helped popularize lesser-known heroines of Jewish history and new feminist rituals, such as making Miriam’s Cup part of the Passover Seder. A writer and educator, Cohen served as program director of Ma’yan for many years and edited its feminist haggadah, The Journey Continues. She also collaborated with the Jewish Women’s Archive to create the first Women of Valor posters and created a women’s Omer calendar in conjunction with the women’s studies department at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. Through Project Kesher, she worked as an educator with women in the former Soviet Union. She is a cofounder of Jewish Activist Gays and Lesbians and Brit Tzedek V’Shalom: The Jewish Alliance for Justice. She served as the director of multicultural and diversity affairs at the University of Florida from 2004 to 2009. She then attended the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College until 2014. As of 2023 she is the Chief Program officer at Moving Traditions, which provides Jewish youth with programs aimed at equity and justice, caring relationships, and personal well-being. She also serves on the board of Women’s March. Cohen received the 2023 Covenant Award for her significant contributions to “Jewish teen education and engagement.”
