Only 2 women in the Forward's "Top 10 to Watch in 2010"
Today the Forward published a list of 10 up-and-coming Jewish political hopefuls "to watch" in 2010. Surprise, surprise, only two were women.
The first was Beth Krom, running for U.S. Congress to represent California’s 48th District. The second was Deb Markowitz, the Secretary of State of Vermont, currently running for Governor.
Markowitz told the Forward, “As a college student, I got to know Vermont’s former governor, Madeleine Kunin. I remember how she encouraged me to run for office someday. ‘Deb, It isn’t enough for women to be at the table; we need to be at the head of the table,’ she said. I’ve kept those words in mind.”
I agree. It isn't enough for women to be an afterthought in "Top 10 Whatever" lists; they need to be given the same consideration as men and fairly represented as such.
Who is missing from the Forward's list? Which Jewish women in politics are you excited about this year?
I was very glad to see Beth Krom on this list. She has a definite shot at wining the Congressional seat in the 48th district.
